The UK Government has announced a temporary suspension of import duty rates on a range of everyday goods in an effort to stimulate economic growth.
Effective from 27 April 2025, the tariff suspension will apply to 89 products described by the government as “summer essentials.” This two-year measure is projected to save importers approximately £17 million annually by removing duties on specific commodity codes.
The products affected include:
-
Pasta
-
Fruit juice
-
Coconut oil
-
Pine nuts
-
Spices
-
Plywood
-
Plastics
-
Gardening products
These zero-duty rates will remain in place until July 2027.
Importers are advised to review the relevant commodity codes to confirm whether their goods qualify under the suspension, as the duty relief applies only to specific classifications.
In its official statement, the government said:
“The UK has already reduced tariffs on certain imported goods, benefitting British consumers with better choice, quality, and prices—for example, fruit juices from Peru and vacuum cleaners from Malaysia.”
It also highlighted ongoing efforts to accelerate trade negotiations with countries including India, the Gulf Cooperation Council, South Korea, and Switzerland, aiming to unlock further business opportunities, support employment, and raise wages.
